.XXX sTLD Delay
31 de marzo de 2006

ICANN, at a board meeting yesterday in Wellington, voted to delay approval for the proposed .XXX TLD for pornographic sites on the Internet. The board passed a resolution referring the proposal from Canada's ICM registry back to ICANN executives for improvements including more stringent business standards for sites in the domain and specific protections for children.

ICANN Board Committee on Reconsideration of the ICANN VeriSign Settlement
31 de marzo de 2006

As a result of the public outcry over the .COM deal with VeriSign, ICANN has created a committee to determine if the .COM deal should be reconsidered. This committee is composed of four individuals - two of whom voted to approve the .COM deal, two voted against the .COM deal. This committee will decide whether the ICANN board shall reconsider the .COM deal with VeriSign or not.

Update Thursday, March 30, 2006: The ICANN Board Committee on Reconsideration of the ICANN VeriSign Settlement just gave its report. The committee recommended against reconsideration. This means that ICANN will not reconsider the deal, and unless the United States Government intervenes, VeriSign will have bullied its way into getting the deal of the century, at the expense of the internet community.

Registrars urge rejection of VeriSign's .com deal
17 de marzo de 2006

Nineteen internet companies, including Network Solutions, have asked ICANN's Board of Directors to reconsider a controversial agreement giving VeriSign control of the .com top-level domain until 2012.

Domain name registrar GoDaddy has also petitioned the US Department of Commerce, which has yet to approve the agreement, asking that the deal be sent back to the ICANN Board.

"We will not sit back without a fight. This deal is outrageous. It's monopolistic because it locks in price hikes and eliminates good old-fashion competition. It's a mistake secretary (Carlos) Gutierrez can stop," GoDaddy.com CEO and founder Bob Parsons said.

On.com Sells for $635,000 at Moniker/DomainSystems
17 de marzo de 2006

This represents the top domain sale reported thus far in 2006. In this case, Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com was not only the venue where the domain was sold, the domain was also owned by them. Moniker CEO Monte Cahn said the domain was recently purchased for an internal marketing project, but decided to sell it when this offer was received.

GoDaddy Caught FCP.COM
15 de marzo de 2006

A very nice catch for GoDaddy. The registrant must be more than happy, that domain is really valuable, and the backorder costs just $18.95!

I thought GoDaddy's backorder service were useless to get any decent dropped domain (they got 2 domains for me, but they were "normal" names).

ICANN Board Approves VeriSign Settlement Agreements
1 de marzo de 2006

Yesterday ICANN approved the revised ICANN-VeriSign agreement dotcom contract that will, for example, give VeriSign the power to raise .COM domain registration fees by 7% in four of the next six years, fees that registrars will pass on to consumers. ICANN's Board voted nine to five in favor of the settlement agreements with one director abstaining.

A group of registrars, representing nearly 60% of all .COM registrations, recently signed an open letter to the board of ICANN (see previous post) stating their opposition to the contract. Besides the raising fees, there are other terms of the contract that those registrars don't like, you can read more about the reasons in Bob Parson's (GoDaddy.com CEO) Blog.

matrimonio.es
25 de febrero de 2006

Sedo have brokered the sale of matrimonio.es ("marriage" in Spanish) for $4,181. Other recent (reported) .es sales include Bioesfera.es ("biosphere" in Spanish) for $953 and hi5.es (hi5.com is a very popular social network site) for $900.

It's nice to see some decent sales since the liberalisation of the .es ccTLD last November (.es is the ccTLD of Spain). I have some .es domains, but not that valuable.
